torch lake home

The design of this seaside-style lake home incorporated the stone fireplace and other portions of the original 100 year-old family cottage. Located on the eastern shore of beautiful Torch Lake as a retirement home, the design was inspired by the classic oceanfront homes of New England's Atlantic coast.

thornapple river timber home

The soaring, timbered interior spaces are reminiscent of the barn of the owner's family farm, including a reclaimed rough-hewn loft ladder from the upper floor to the ridge. The design focuses on views of the river and the natural area beyond.

A critical design objective was controlling construction costs while including premium materials such as timber trusses, structural insulated panels (SIPS), steel roofing & siding, and Pella windows & doors. This was accomplished by careful space planning and adhering to an 8x8 foot construction module. This allowed the use of full 8'x20' wall & roof panels and efficient timber beam spans & column spacing. lake homes

Lake homes are very rewarding projects for an architect. Many times, the home is designed as a family cottage or retirement home that will host future family gatherings that build lasting memories. Anticipating this, the clients' role in the planning process can be more engaging with their architect and this collaboration yields very personal home designs.
